Welcome!
I am the Georgia Athletic Association Professor of International Affairs in the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia. Starting in the fall of 2024, I am also a Regents' Professor at UGA.
In 2023, I was named the Karl Deutsch Award winner from the International Studies Association. This award “ was established in 1981 to recognize scholars in IR under age 45, or within fifteen years of defending their dissertation. The Karl Deutsch Award is presented annually to a scholar who is judged to have made (through a body of publications) the most significant contribution to the study of International Relations and Peace Research.”
I've been the Department Head for the Department of International Affairs at UGA since 2018. I'm also the past editor-in-chief of International Studies Review and co-editor of the University of Georgia Press Studies in Security and International Affairs Book Series. I really loved serving as the the Graduate Coordinator for the department from 2016-2018.
In 2015, I served as President of the International Studies Association - Midwest. I was the 2016 Program Chair for the International Studies Association Annual Convention. From the fall of 2012 to the summer of 2016, I was an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Missouri. I also served as Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Political Science. From the fall 2009 to the summer of 2012, I was an Assistant Professor at Kansas State University. In May of 2009, I received my Ph.D. from Emory University.
I study International Relations, specializing in the behavior of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and their interactions with states, local populations, and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs). Most of my work centers on human rights and human security. A recent article identified me as a 4th most productive researcher in the cross-disciplinary field of human rights from 1990 to 2020.
I am also interested in dissent, development, quantitative methodologies, formal modeling, and conflict more generally. To learn more about my research, please check out my CV, Research Page, or the page devoted to my Current Book.
In my spare time, if I'm not hanging out with my cool spouse and awesome college-age daughters, I really like to read Duck of Minerva. I wish I still had more time to blog! I also like reading The Quantitative Peace.
Fun new research: Women's Protest Predictions, Civil Society Restrictions & Terrorism
